Why Do You Need Car Insurance?

Most states require drivers to carry minimum liability auto insurance, also known as the “30/60/25” plan, which ensures financial responsibility in an accident.

It helps avoid unforeseen damage expenses as your insurance plan covers your vehicle’s repair and replacement costs in case of an accident and other events.

Liability insurance shields you from legal and financial ramifications if you cause an accident, as it covers the affected party's medical expenses and property damage.

If you are injured in an accident, car insurance can help pay for your medical bills and those of your passengers, whether you are at fault or not.

Car insurance provides peace of mind by protecting your finances from unforeseen financial losses, such as collision and non-collision-related vehicle damage.

What Are the Minimum Requirements for Car Insurance by State?

Bodily Injury Liability Coverage

Nearly all states mandate liability coverage minimums like 15/30/10, translating to $15,000 bodily injury per person and $30,000 per accident. Texas, however, follows the 30/60/25 rule.

Property Damage Liability Coverage

It is a mandatory liability coverage requirement except in the state of Virginia. Most states require a $10,000 minimum limit for property damage, while Texas mandates $25,000.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage

In half of the states, your uninsured motorist coverage should match your liability coverage so that your damages are covered in case you are in an accident with an uninsured driver.

Underinsured Motorist Coverage

Mainly required alongside uninsured motorist coverage, UIM Coverage mirrors your liability coverage and helps pay the damage costs if the at-fault driver has inadequate insurance.

Comprehensive Coverage

Comprehensive coverage protects the policyholder against various non-collision incidents, such as theft, vandalism, natural disasters, etc. The State doesn't mandate this coverage.

Collision Coverage

While not usually mandated by states, lenders may require you to carry collision coverage for your car loan, as it covers your vehicle damage expenses, regardless of who is at fault.

Medical Payments Coverage (MedPay)

Medical Payments Coverage is optional in most states. Still, it is highly recommended because it covers the medical expenses for you and your passengers after an accident.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

PIP coverage is required in around 20% of US states. It covers the policyholder's and other passengers' medical bills plus their lost wages. It is mostly common in no-fault states.

Which US States Require Car Insurance?

Nearly all US states legally require drivers to purchase auto insurance. The regulations concerning the coverage types and minimum coverage requirements may vary by state. For example, you must have property damage liability and PIP coverage in Florida. However, almost all other states mandate liability coverage for property damage and bodily injury.

Which States Don’t Require Car Insurance?

The only states that dont require car insurance are New Hampshire and Virginia. Drivers who do not want to purchase car insurance in New Hampshire must still prove they are financially responsible enough to fulfill the state’s "Financial Responsibility Requirements (FRR)." This ensures that you can afford to cover the damage costs of the other party in case of an accident. In Virginia, drivers can choose not to fulfill the state's insurance requirements if they can pay an annual $500 uninsured motorist fee - however, this isn’t a standalone coverage.
